Chapter Six
The wheels of the restraint chair whispered against the polished floor. Kate sat rigid inside the straps, arms still locked uselessly, the heavy chastity belt and metallic bra pressing their unfamiliar weight into her skin. An IV line remained taped to the inside of her left forearm, the clear tubing running up to a half-full bag of fluids clipped to a pole on the wheelchair. She barely registered it anymore. Unbeknownst to her, the solution was formulated to keep the body both hydrated and optimally conductive; a secondary effect was the steady, quiet filling of her bladder.
The air in the final corridor was colder than the prep rooms. It moved across her bare arms and the exposed upper curve of her chest without resistance; she could not pull her shoulders in or fold her arms to protect herself. Every small shift of the chair sent a dull ache through the muscles of her lower back where the locked hardware sat heaviest.
Worse was the traitor between her legs. The saline and the vacuum had left her clitoris swollen and hypersensitive. Tiny, unwanted pulses of pleasure kept flickering through the engorged tissue whenever the chair vibrated over a seam in the floor. Heat climbed her throat. She stared straight ahead and prayed the feeling did not show on her face.
They stopped in front of a thick military-grade door. A digital clock above the frame counted backward in clean red numerals. Three minutes. Two minutes fifty. Kate felt strangely detached, as if she were watching someone else wait for the end of the world. The diaper and the metal undergarments made every small movement feel exaggerated and obscene. She could only imagine what she looked like—shaved, swollen, locked into hardware that belonged on no ordinary woman. The embarrassment sat just beneath the fear, sharp and constant.
A new, quieter humiliation arrived without warning. Her nervous bladder, already under pressure from the IV fluids, released a slow, involuntary trickle. Warm urine leaked past the slender stem of the pear, across the vaginal shield of the belt, and into the absorbent padding of the execution diaper. The amount was small, but the sensation was unmistakable. Kate’s face burned. She glanced down as far as the posture restraints allowed, trying to see whether a yellow splotch had already darkened the outer plastic. The material still looked mostly opaque. She could not tell if Lydia, standing only a few steps away, had noticed.
Behind her the soft roll of other wheels announced the arrival of the remaining two. Kate did not turn fully, but peripheral vision was enough. The first was young, barely into her twenties, a small skinny wisp of a woman whose chest had clearly required significant saline to fill the cups of the metallic bra; the flesh looked tight and almost artificial against the heavy hardware. The second was older, matronly, perhaps in her forties, her larger breasts visibly compressed into the same style of bra until the metal edges bit into soft tissue. None of them spoke. Each woman occupied her own narrow corridor of thought. Kate kept her eyes forward.
Lydia stood a short distance to the side, tablet in hand. She checked something on the screen, then stepped closer and lowered her voice so only Kate could hear.
“Your daughter has checked in. She’ll be on the far left of the viewing screen.”
The words landed like a blow. For a moment Kate’s breath stopped completely. She wanted to say no—wanted to demand they turn Kalani away, tell her to leave, tell her she did not have to watch this. The protest rose as far as her throat and died there. She could not force the words out. Lydia seemed to understand without needing them. She rested two fingers lightly against the edge of the restraint on Kate’s shoulder, a small, steady pressure.
“It’s all right,” the psychologist murmured. “Use the time. Think about what you want to say.”
A fresh spike of panic cut through the detachment. Kate had never settled on a final statement. Every version she had rehearsed in the cell had collapsed under the weight of the moment. Now the clock was still falling and the only audience that mattered would be sitting on the other side of the glass. She closed her eyes for a single breath, then opened them again. Whatever came out of her mouth would be about Kalani. Something positive. Something that might remain after the rest of this was finished.
The red numerals reached zero.
A deep mechanical clunk sounded inside the door. Seals released in sequence. The thick military-grade panel began to unseal, the gap widening with deliberate, hydraulic certainty. Every pair of eyes in the short line locked onto that growing dark rectangle. Cold air moved out from the chamber beyond, carrying the faint metallic scent of ozone and polished steel.
Kate’s heart hammered against the locked bra. The chair beneath her did not move. Not yet. The warm, shameful dampness in the diaper continued its slow spread.
