Chapter 7 of 10
Chapter Seven
The witness gallery was deliberately soft. Muted beige walls, low lighting, rows of wide upholstered chairs that looked as if they had been chosen for people who might have to sit for a long time. The air smelled faintly of clean carpet and filtered ventilation. Only the floor broke the illusion of ordinary institutional comfort: glossy tile interrupted by a series of round metal drains, and the low, constant hum of industrial air exchange strong enough to keep the space clinically fresh no matter what happened on the other side of the glass.
Kalani stepped through the door and hesitated. Karen appeared at her elbow almost at once, having quietly swapped seat assignments with a colleague. The journalist’s presence landed like a physical relief. Kalani was almost startled by how grateful she felt—more effective than any of the pills still sitting in her bag.
A Chiron employee in a neat gray uniform stood at the front of the gallery and waited until the last witnesses had filed in. Her voice was practiced and even.
“Under each seat you will find a sealed emesis bag. Please use it if necessary. Once the procedure begins, the following rules are in effect: any disruption will result in immediate removal. If you leave the gallery you will not be permitted to re-enter. There is one restroom at the rear; be patient if a line forms. The viewing window will remain opaque until Head Nurse Sterling authorizes transparency. Questions will not be taken after this point.”
Kalani sank into the chair Karen had claimed for them on the far left. The large opaque screen that filled the entire front wall looked thick enough to stop a vehicle. She was almost certain she could hear faint movement on the other side—wheels, low voices, the soft thud of something heavy being adjusted—despite the glass. The sound might have been imagination. She could not tell.
Then she saw him.
Her father sat three rows forward and to the right, one ankle crossed over his knee, scrolling through his tablet with the same bored efficiency he had always used at family dinners. A younger woman Kalani did not recognize leaned into his shoulder, speaking too close to his ear. New girlfriend. Of course. Rage rose so fast and hot that Kalani’s vision narrowed. She forced her hands flat against her thighs and looked away. She would not give him the satisfaction of acknowledgment. Not today.
On the other side of the sealed door the air was colder and sharper.
Anya Sterling stood just inside the threshold as the military-grade panel finished its slow hydraulic opening. Behind her the raised metal stage waited under bright industrial lights, three oversized chairs bolted in a precise row, generators humming softly beneath the flooring. She surveyed the short line of restrained women with professional calm, then spoke in a clear, carrying voice that left no room for misunderstanding.
“I am Head Nurse Executioner Anya Sterling. You are guests in my chamber. You will remain quiet and respectful for the duration of the process. You are here to be rightfully punished by the State. You are here to be executed. Anything less than composure is improper.”
The word executed struck Kate like ice water. Her heart seemed to seize, then beat harder against the locked metallic bra. When her name was called—“Inmate 4487, Kate Addison”—the remaining fragile hope of commutation simply drained away. There was no last-minute stay. No messenger running down the corridor. Only the soft roll of her wheelchair as the nurses guided her across the threshold and into the chamber proper.
The stage rose in front of her, higher than it had looked from the doorway. Beneath it the generators sat in their cages like patient animals. The three chairs dominated the space—heavy frames of wood and metal, straps and positioning hardware already open and waiting. They looked less like furniture and more like machines designed for a single irreversible purpose.
Nurses freed her from the wheelchair with practiced efficiency and guided her onto the stage. Halfway to the center chair her legs simply stopped working. Fear blanked her vision for a moment; the floor tilted. Two pairs of hands caught her before she could fall and lowered her into the seat with impersonal expertise. The anal shield of the chair met the rear port of her diaper with a soft, precise alignment. Cold wood and colder metal pressed against the backs of her thighs and the curve of her spine. The sensation was surreal—too solid, too real, too final.
A sealed plastic package rested on the rolling tray beside the chair. Through the clear film Kate could see a heavy leather hood shaped almost like a blank doll’s face, complete with buckles and internal padding. She looked away.
Lydia remained close, just outside the immediate working radius of the nurses. She did not touch Kate now—protocol forbade it once the condemned was on the stage—but her voice stayed low and steady, giving Kate something to anchor to while the physical work began.
The nurses moved methodically. Positioning blocks were locked into place against her hips and outer thighs. Padded leather straps crossed her waist, abdomen, and chest in layered sequence. Shoulder guards settled over the metallic bra and were tightened until her upper body could not twist. Clamps and secondary straps followed, each checked twice. The posture collar closed around her throat with a firm, inescapable pressure that forced her chin slightly upward; it was deeply uncomfortable, but Kate was already too occupied with the shape of possible final words to waste energy on it.
One nurse gathered her hair, pulled it into a tight ponytail, and threaded the length through the hard leather cradle of the headrest so that her skull was held in exact alignment. Small foam earphones were pressed into her ear canals. The chamber’s ambient noise dropped to a distant, muffled roar.
On the large screen mounted above the still-opaque witness window, multiple camera feeds flickered to life—angles of the stage, the chairs, the other two women being brought forward and seated. The overlapping images were disorienting. Kate could see herself from the outside: a shaved, restrained figure locked into an oversized machine of wood and steel, diaper bulk and metallic hardware fully visible. She looked away from that feed and found the other two condemned already weeping as their own straps were tightened.
The nurses opened the plastic package. The leather faceplate came free with a soft rustle. Lydia stepped as close as protocol allowed.
“This is as far as I can go,” she said quietly. “You’re not alone in the room. Your daughter is on the other side. Make the words count if you can.”
Kate’s throat closed. Panic surged, sharp and animal. She did the only thing her body still permitted—shifted her hips a fraction against the electrode nodules that still pressed into her swollen clitoris, chasing a tiny, shameful spark of sensation simply to stay present. It was not enough, but it was something.
Then the faceplate settled over her features. Soft leather met skin. Buckles tightened at the sides and crown. The eye covers and mouth panel remained open for now, but the rest of the hood already erased the familiar shape of her face. The purpose was simple and clinical: to spare the witnesses the uncontrolled contortions of a body in extremis. Kate understood it intellectually. Emotionally it felt like the last piece of her had been taken away.
She forced her breathing into a slow, deliberate rhythm and listened to the muffled sounds of the other two women being finished. Straps pulled tight. Buckles clicked. Soft, broken weeping continued without pause.
Anya and her apprentice moved from chair to chair, inspecting every restraint, every connection, every alignment with calm, exacting attention. Valerie carried a tablet; Anya carried nothing but her own certainty. When they reached Kate’s chair the Head Nurse tested the posture collar, the chest straps, the precise seating of the anal port against the chair’s shield. She gave a short nod.
“Secure,” she said. “Prepare for the next phase.”
The chamber lights hummed. The generators waited. On the far side of the still-opaque glass, Kalani sat with her hands locked together and Karen silent beside her, both of them staring at the blank screen that would soon become a window.
