Chapter 11 of 21
The invitation to Vinters House was a catalyst. The small, clandestine meetings in Rochester's living rooms felt like child's play in comparison to the grand vision Lady Dashworth had proposed. Celia and Eleanor selected eight of their most committed and discreet members for the first party, making it unequivocally clear that this was a significant step up. "This is not one of our little gatherings," Celia told them over a tense, hushed meeting. "We are representatives of our club. Our husbands will be deposited at the back door as before. We will enter at the front. We will be observant and courteous to our hosts and their guests. Our behavior reflects on all of us."
The day of the party buzzed with an electric energy. Most of the ladies had their own transport, and a convoy of cars, from sensible Austins to a gleaming Jaguar, made its way through the Kent countryside. They arrived in a staggered procession, the elegant saloons depositing their occupants at the grand front door, while the husbands were directed to the rear, where the now-familiar Bedford vans and other assorted vehicles were parked
The drawing room at Vinters House was transformed. It was filled with women, a sea of silk, wool, and perfume, all drawn together by a single, powerful purpose. Celia and Eleanor were pleased to see that there was no evidence of the usual class distinctions. The wife of a dockyard manager from Chatham was chatting amiably with a viscountess from Tunbridge Wells. Here, they were equals. The only currency that mattered was power. The empowerment of the Matriarchy and the demise of the Patriarchy was the stated, and celebrated, goal. Drinks flowed freely, a string quartet played softly in a corner, and the atmosphere was one of triumphant, conspiratorial joy.
A magnificent meal was served in a banquet hall that could have hosted royalty. The ladies ate and drank, their conversations a heady mix of gossip, strategy, and shared experience. Downstairs, their husbands were being processed. Stripped of their clothing and their dignity the moment they entered the house, they were herded into a holding area. They were all under strict orders, relayed through their wives before they had left home: do exactly as you are told, without hesitation or question.
After dinner, the true nature of the evening began. A bell chimed, and the drawing room doors opened. The ten husbands from the Medway towns were led into the room. Their hands were tied securely behind their backs with rough, abrasive rope. Rough rope collars were tied around their necks, with leashes attached, held by their wives. They were a parade of submission, their eyes downcast, their bodies trembling slightly.
Lady Dashworth's friends, a group of formidable women who had, until now, relied on less sophisticated methods of control, marveled at the sight. "Good heavens," one of them, a Baroness, murmured, leaning closer to inspect Frank's cage. "Is that steel? How exquisitely cruel." They had made do with tight leather shorts with locks on the waistbands, a crude but effective measure. The gleaming, inescapable cages worn by the Medway men were a revelation.
As a surprise for their hostesses, Celia and Eleanor had arranged for a special guest. Susan arrived, looking every bit the successful businesswoman in a sharp tailored suit. Behind her, crawling on his hands and knees, was Briggs. He was naked, save for a thick leather apron tied around his waist and, of course, his own custom-fitted steel cage. His back was a canvas of fresh, angry red welts, the clear signature of Susan's horsewhip. He was introduced not as a foreman, but as Susan's property and craftsman. Lady Dashworth's circle of friends were enthralled. They descended upon him, a flock of elegant predators, and began placing orders for cages for their own husbands, their voices sharp and decisive as they specified measurements and design details.
The evening progressed into a symphony of dominance. Different displays of punishment and servitude were enacted. One husband was made to serve as a footstool for three ladies. Another was flogged lightly by his wife for a perceived slight. It was a celebration of their new order. To cater to the more immediate desires of the guests, a group of young, fit men and women circulated through the rooms. They were all exceptionally handsome, their bodies toned and poised. The men were all, notably, very well-endowed, a fact that did not go unnoticed. The ladies, who ranged from slim to curvy, were available for any pleasure the guests might desire. Many of the Medway crowd, emboldened by the atmosphere and the flowing champagne, took up the offer and disappeared into the numerous private rooms with their chosen partners. The choices surprised Eleanor and Celia; many of their friends, women they had always assumed to be staunchly heterosexual, picked young ladies, their explorations adding another layer to the evening's liberating transgressions.
The boundaries for the submissive husbands were clear: they were open to be used in any way by any of the ladies present. They were servants, objects, symbols, toys for the guests.
As the night drew on, Celia and Eleanor sat down with Lady Dashworth and a few of her closest friends in a private study. The discussion was serious and forward-looking. They spoke of logistics, of funding, of expanding their influence into other counties. They agreed to form a joint venture, a council that would oversee the growth of their movement, combining the grassroots network of the Medway Sisterhood with the old money and political influence of Lady Dashworth's circle. The party was not just a celebration; it was the founding of a new, formidable alliance.
