Chapter 3 of 13

Ratatoskr

I felt everything. Life and emotions. They were all around me and yet I couldn't see them. It was wonderful and intoxicating but scary and worrying. Why was this happening? Where am I? What has my existence done so far? The earliest recollection of my memories brings me there. I would like to tell my story to those fortunate enough to complete their challenges from my tree. Let's begin. Suddenly, I saw two spaces. I enjoyed my darkness and loneliness though only one of these worlds shared what I liked. One world was green and full of water while the other had a sapling of some tree and was completely dark. I saw this and I chose it by floating to it. I had not noticed but I had no body. I was just a soul without a being. Right as I noticed this, I believe I touched it with my soul and was suddenly transported there, to the land of darkness and a single tree sapling. Only now, the sapling was instead a small tree about the same size as I. Suddenly, I had paws and a being. I appeared to be a 6'4 rodent of some kind, though not entirely bipedal. When I tried to walk on my hind legs I fell funnily and hit my head. This knocked me out and I didn't wake up for a long time. I believe I slept for millennia. When I rose and awoke I attempted to walk on all four of my paws. This worked and that's when I noticed it, the tree had grown to be massive. It was nearly piercing the fabric of this pocket universe I found. That's when it first happened, it spoke to me. "I need help. The universe needs help. I need to give mortals the power of gods and yet I do not have the ability to summon any. We need balance and protection in the universe though nobody has found me but you." It spoke softly but loudly. I couldn't see or perhaps understand where or how it spoke. I did agree though, and I stepped out of my safe bubble. Now perhaps I was asleep for longer than I thought since mortals had built their homes already. Intelligent apes and other species were all doing the same thing, building. I descended from the skies and chose a few beings to be tested. These few were named in Hecate's log. I brought them back one by one to my home, letting the tree test them. The tree would shift and mould into courses for the mortals to get through. I could tell it was an illusion, that it didn't actually shift, though it was very convincing. The mortals all ran their courses and we watched them. We granted them minor but divine powers, though this was without much of my help. When I exit my home, I simply lose more than half of my divine powers. I could still fly and teleport but I could feel even my immortality escape until I went home. One day, when I awoke, I felt new presences. I was shocked as I had not brought anyone in a long time. When I walked around my tree I saw them, two divine and incredibly holy creatures. They spoke softly, curious about what I was, who I was, and why I was. Why did I allow mortals to become divine? We simply wished for balance. I had not known of a divinity higher than even my tree. They arranged a small deal with me. Every decade I choose a few people for Hecate and me to test. Gekido was a second opinion and a valued caregiver. Newly-made gods needed help understanding their new divinity. They could not go home as I had not considered why my tree grew so much. My own cells helped it grow. In a way, I suppose I'm its father. I noticed something in Hecate. She had three persons, three personalities that were in her. I hope she can keep in control as I sense one of them is nothing but evil and pain. When they left my tree formed itself into a makeshift cabin of sorts. It had water and an unlimited supply of berries. I love my berries. I now work to serve the divine goddess Hecate and to help those in need whose prayers aren't answered by their gods. That is my story, goodbye.
